Hi,

first at all, congrats and thanks for this nice product.

I'm trying to add the following podcast to BeyondPod but it tells me it's not pointing to a valid RSS feed:
http://www.cadenaser.com/rssaudio/larguero.html

Others feeds, like the ones installed by default, work.

I'm using that url in my podcast receiver in my laptop and it works.

My unit is a T-Mobile Dash (with WM6).

Thanks.

I am having issues with lot of rss feeds. Some work but most dont for me..

these are a few examples,
http://catalog.multcolib.org/feeds/newaudiobooks.xml

http://myespn.go.com/profile/thfeed

actually anything ending with a xml is not working for me. I am using a t-mobile dash wm6.

All the above feeds are working using gooogle reader.

Thanks for reporting that.
I confirmed that the first feed is not working, but I was able to load the second one with no problems. Can you check if by any chance the url was mistyped on your device?
I will investigate what is going on with the fieeds that end on ".xml". Something seems to confuse the Microsoft HTTP library I am using.

This is weird.. After I reported here the second feed started working.. Initially it was complaining but now it seems to work every time.. Still having issues with xml ones. Thanks for looking at it.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried the "brokein60_dayz" in Internet Explorer RSS viewand it comes empty. From what I can tell there is something wrong with the feed XML.

When I paste the link on IE I get the following suggestion,
You have selected the raw data feed for the GetJealous.com site you were viewing, . This data is suitable for aggregation by an automated, RSS-capable newsreader. Your browser does not currently support display of RSS content.

Using an automated RSS aggregator will allow you to read this and other RSS-enabled-sites by polling and downloading the content and viewing it in the application. This will save you significant time normally spent visiting and reading each site in turn.

Some suggestions for an automated newsreader are:
Web

* Add to My Yahoo! My Yahoo
* Add to Google Reader! Google Reader

ANd when I put it on google reader this works perfectly for me... I dont have the RSS view in IE so not sure about that.

Thanks, I was just about to ask you to verify if this is the correct feed. The new link works in Explorer (I use IE7 RSS Feed view) and I also found what was the issue with BeyondPod. I will fix it for the next build.

Would you be interested in beta testing the new build before I release it. I added functionality to be able update all feeds at once, (which triggered a major changes in the internal implementations). I would like for a couple of people try it before I officially release.

I would love to beta test the new build.. Updating all the feeds at one time is a great idea . That will be really useful. Let me know how to download the beta copy.

You can download the latest beta from the BETA page. This version has also the fix for the "http://www.getjealous.com/brokein60_dayz/rss.xml"

Glad to hear that "brokein60_dayz" is now working for you.
I don't think there is much you can do wrong with the batch update. When you start batch update it should try to update each of your feeds in sequence starting from the first feed. A small "Updating..." text should appear in the bottom right corner of the feed and the title should show you how many feeds are remaining to update. If the feed is updated it makes the feed bold and shows a date it was updated in the bottom right corner in the feeds list. Sometimes a feed may not have a new content (yet) so in this case we skip the update of this feed - this way not all feeds will be updated every time. So far the only time I have seen it not updating is if there is no connection to the network - then the update process goes very fast, but no updates are occurring.

Can you see if the manual, old style, update still works (when you update the feed from the "web browser" view using the Update button). Also can you try the batch update a couple of times to see if this was an intermittent issue or it does not work for you at all. Also there is a log file that is created in the BeyondPod install folder - BeyondPodLog.txt - it may have some data about what is going on.

It is working fine for me now.. I think the first time I already had the latest feed and checked again.. THanks

Hi and thanks for a great product. I am new to BeyondPod (and using RSS) and I was wondering when/how often my rss feeds are updated? I have one feed I would like to update at 1:01 am eachday and I don't know if there is a scheduler within the program or if this is possible.

Thanks,

I am glad you find BeyondPod useful. Unfortunately, currently the feeds have to be updated manually. You can update several feeds (and download their podcasts) in one step, but never the less, at this time, you have to trigger the update. Scheduled updates is actually the primary functionality scheduled for the next version.

Jul 29, 2007 at 6:23 AM
can you pass the "update feeds" command to the program through the command line? So if I found a task sheduler that could run the program at a certain time, is there a beyondpod.exe /updateall type of command that could be used to update the feeds?

Unfortunately there are no command line options at this time (but that really sounds like a good idea). I am hoping to get a version with a scheduled update within the next couple of weeks.

Does anyone know if BeyondPod works with WM 5.1.1702 (Build 14366.1.0.1)? I have a HP Ipaq hx2490b and this program is just what I'm looking for - great job with this! My problem is the downlink link to download a podcast on the content page does nothing. If a set the feed to automatically download podcasts and I update the feed it still will not download anything. There are no errors displayed. The only thing I've found about the download link problem is it may be a bug in IE. Thanks.

It should work. You are correct that the the link is not working due to bug in IE, but the "update" download should work fine. Did you enable the automatic downloads for this feed (Menu > Manage Feeds > Edit Feed, scroll down to "Download Podcasts", check it and enter a number of podcasts to download.) You have to do that for every feed, whose podcasts you want to automatically download.

Thanks skyntchev for the quick reply. I had thought I tried that yesterday but when I checked it today download podcasts was not checked. I checked the box and now it works. The only issue is one of my feeds has 96 podcasts of which I've already listened to 94 of them. It looks like I have to download all of them to get to the latest 2. I have other feeds like this too. I really like the program so I'm going to download all of them and delete the ones I've listened to. here is no workaround to the IE bug?

I am glad it worked. You don't have to download all 96 podcasts. BeyondPod will download the number of podcasts you specify starting from the most recent one, so if you tell it to download 2, it will download then last (most recent) 2. After you download the 2, you can select (Menu > Manage Feeds > Mark Downloaded) to mark the remaining 94 podcasts as downloaded.
The only way around the IE bug as far as I know is to apply a service pack to the device (known as AKU) or update the device to WM6. There is a good chance that HP provides the correct AKU for your device.

skyntchev,

Ones of my feeds is http://feeds.feedburner.com/startupbizcast. They use a stats service so all of their podcasts are named redirect.mp3. BeyondPod will download one and then say "already downloaded" for the rest of them. Is there a workaround for this?

I posted an updated version here http://www.codeplex.com/beyondpod/Wiki/View.aspx?title=BETA that has a possible solution to your problem. Unfortunately, that did not work on my device, because it is still failing to follow all the redirects correctly. If you were able to download at least one podcast, the updated build should solve your problem, so give it a try and let me know if it worked. I think that there is may be some difference in how different versions of the Compact framework follow web redirects so it may be specific just to my device version.

Help! I have a Motorola Q and I've been looking for a podcatcher. So I downloaded and installed Beyond Pod on my phone. but when I go to use it, I get an error message "a problem has occurred iwth ppmobile.exe". Please please....any help? I downloaded it on the storage card...is that okay? Also, I do have Microsoft .net CF 2.0 on the phone.

Any other help, please?

Motorola Q had a known issue running .NET CF 2.0 applications that was fixed in the the MOL3 upgrade. Here is a link to another post that talks about that http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=9216153&postcount=32. I hope that helps!

I do have Windows Media Player....

any thoughts?

My guess is that this is a problem with the way this particular feed specifies the name of the podcasts. BeyondPod uses the file extension to decide what player to use (the built -in player or an external player). If the extension is unknown, or there is no extension, it will not know what player to start. Does this happen with all feeds or just a particular feed. If it happens with a particular feed only, can you please post the URL of this feed so I can research it further. You can also try to upgrade to the last release 2.5.2, it has a fix for a bug that was similar to this one, so it may work.

Gabrielle,

I posted a new version (2.5.3) that should fix the issue you are having with this feed. After you install it, edit the feed properties for that feed (Menu > Manage Feeds > Edit Feed) and check "Force unique names" check box (it is at the very bottom, after you select "More Settings>>"). Once you do that, podcast names should become something like "pcXXXX.mp3" and should play correctly.

It worked!! Wow...thank you soooo much for your time and help!
Peace.

Hi! I am using v2.5.5 on my Dell Axim. It seems to work quite well. However, since this device does not have a physical keyboard, many of the keyboard shortcuts are not very convenient. Instead, I have the four main action buttons plus a four-way rocker. As a result, during playback, I don't have access to more shortcuts than the four way rocker. This means I have to pick ffwd or skip-fwd for the right button, but I cannot have both.

Is there any way to have the other buttons available for keyboard shortcuts? I know this is possible in other media players I use (i.e. mortplayer).

Thanks!

i recently starting using Beyonpod and love it!
Thanks for the great project.

2 questions:
Does BeyondPod work with mp4 video podcasts like MrExcel? (I couldn't get it to work)
http://feeds.feedburner.com/LearnExcelFromMrexcelPodcast

Also, the media player does not show the progress of the file while it plays (the podcast view does, but is only helpful for resuming).
Can someone recommend a free compatible media player that does (or is this a feature that can be added).

Thanks,
Ari

Hi Ari. I am glad you like BeyondPod.

1. In order to play MP4 video you will need to download a player that can play that. One good solution is TCPMP (just Google TCPMP and you will find many links to it). As long as mp4 extension is registered to start TCPMP (or any other capable player) BeyondPod will launch it when you try to play mp4 files. You can also potentially tell BeyondPod to use an external player for all files, but then you will loose the "how much was played" tracking functionality.

2. To get the progress to show up - just pick a different Media Player skin from the "Tools -> Settings" menu. The default (original) skin is very "basic". The 2 skins that come with BeyondPod (one for Smartphone and One for PocketPC) are a bit "richer".

About that mrexcel podcast, although beyondpod downloaded 3 episides, they did not show up in beyondpod.
I had to use file manager to find them. Am I missing something?

Thanks a million! I now am able to view the progress (using Moto Q smartphone).

I think you have stumbled over a bug. I will post an updated version in the next couple of days. There used to be a setting to show/hide unsupported file types but it was later removed as unnecessary. In a mean time, if you feel comfortable adding this line to your Settings.xml file (located in BeyondPod install folder on the device)

<add key="ShowUnsupportedFileTypes" value="1" />

This will enable showing of unsupported files in the UI.

Do I have to edit the xml file on a PC (the smartphone doesn't have anything like Notepad)? Can you recommend a text editer for windows mobile?

Thanks again for all the help.

Do I have to edit the xml file on a PC (the smartphone doesn't have anything like Notepad)? Can you recommend a text editer for windows mobile?

Thanks again for all the help.

The one I use from time to time is Pocket Notepad http://tillanosoft.com/ce/pnotepad.html. For some reason I end up editing most of the time on the PC anyway.
While you are on the PC make sure you can open the file in Internet Explorer before and after editing. This way you can quickly verify that that file is formatted correctly. On WM6 devices I think you can do the same thing on the device as Pocket IE will also do the validation for you.

It worked.
I edited the file with Pocket Notepad (great utility by the way, thanks) and the podcasts are now visible.
As for TCPMP, it wouldn't play the file at all. The error I got was that the H.264 codec is not supported, and also an error for the audio codec (I think AAC)
It's interesting. The built in player at least plays the audio, but not video.

Is it possible to install a H.264 codec to allow the integrated player to read the file?
I tried googling, but didn't really find anything.

I don't think you can add extra codecs to Windows Media player (this is what BeyondPod uses internally). I would go the other way and add the codecs to TCPMP. Here is a link to get you started: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/multimedia/134514-h-264-avc-codec-tcpmp-2.html

Hmm...one problem though.
I associated mp4 with TCPMP in the TCPMP options.
When opening the file in file manager, it opens in TCPMP. But beyondpod still opens it in windows media player (where only the audio works)
Any suggestions?

Ari,

If you update to the latest release (2.6.1.18) this problem should be fixed. Use Menu->Help->Check fo Updates from your device to download it.

I hope this isn't a stupid question: I have a podcast (http://podcast.hr-online.de/hr2_wissenswert/podcast.xml) that has some 50+ items. I marked all as "read" yesterday to get only new ones. Today a new item appeared (I can even see it in the podcast page with a "download" link, while all others have a "download again" link) but when I choose "update feed" I get the message "nothing to download". The max. number of podcasts is set to 10, and I have only 7 downloaded. so that is not the problem.
Can anyone help? Isn't this meant to work so that I automatically get new podcasts (I am new to podcasts, but am an experienced computer user).

EDIT: It even shows "Download All 1 New Podcasts" on top of the podcast page. I don't understand why "update feed" does not download anything then?

I am not sure what is going on but you are correct to assume that that should download the last podcast. I did subscribe to that feed and it downloaded the podcasts correctly. What version of BeyondPod are you using?
The latest version does not have "Mark Downloaded" menu option anymore, so I am guessing you are using ver 2.5. BeyondPod always downloads the podcasts starting from the most recent one, so there is no need to mark the podcasts as downloaded (this is why that menu option was removed from the last version).

Most likely you did not tell BeyondPod to automatically download the podcasts for this feed (select the feed and then Menu->Manage Feeds->Edit Feed, and make sure that "Download Podcasts" checkbox is checked and you have a correct number of podcasts to download. (In version 2.6 this option is checked on by default).

If the fix above does not work you can try is to delete that feed and and try to subscribe to it again.

Now as you mention it I recall having marked them downloaded before upgrading to the latest version. Maybe that possibly caused the problem?

That makes awfully sense :-) but unfortunately does not work here. I deleted the feed as proposed by you, and resubscribed. It downloaded the three oldest Podcasts (Starting with "Gewalt wird verlernt..." from September). What am I doing wrong???

OK, NOW I see the problem... This feed is the ONLY feed that I have encountered so far (... and I have worked with hundreds of them) that has its posts in reverse order. In every other feed, the first item in the feed is the most recent one, so you don't have to scroll to the bottom to see it, here the new items are at the bottom. I have to add some code to explicitly sort the feed in the right order, something that is probably good either way. I will try to put that in a new development build hopefully in the next week or so.
Jan 18, 2008 at 5:06 PM
My goodness, this is a public radio station, one should think they know how to do a podcast (one of the podcasts is even about what podcasts are ;-) but maybe it's really a good idea to have beyondpod consider the date and sort by itself. Hope you find an easy way to get this done!

So I am happy to here you will care about this. Did I already mention that beyondpod really rocks?!!? So I guess I'll donate some bucks soon!

Negg,

I posted a new development build that has a solution for your special feed. Because it is the only "odd" feed so far, I did not add a UI to turn that on so you have to do it by manually changing that option on in the feed repository (TrackState.xml). If you want to give it a try:
1. Download and install the latest development build (2.6.2.4).
2. Start BeyondPod and then exit - this will upgrade the feed repository
3. Copy TrackState.xml to your desktop
4. Open it in Notepad, find the feed name, after the feed name find the first "forceItemSort=" and change the value "0" to "1". (You should probably open TrackState.xml in Internet Explorer before and after you edit to make sure the file is valid.)
5. Save and copy back to your device.

Once you start BeyondPod you should see the feed sorted so that the most recent post is last.
If you have trouble editing the file just e-mail your TrackState.xml to support AT beyondpod.mobi and I will edit it for you.

Yes, sorry, The most recent first. It started as a correct sentence, I edited it several times and it ended saying exactly the opposite of what I wanted. Go figure ;-)

Ok here is the deal, and I may not have any idea what im talking about here but negg's problem sounds a lot like mine and in some ways different. I actually have 2 proiblems but lest start with #1 I have recently downloaded beyondpods latest version and have never had it before. I have a HTC kaiser in the at&t for of the tilt. WM6. So here is the deal I have set my max podcasts and whatnot and for some reason it says 0/0 for the last 5 feeds in my list, I know there are feeds there and available for download and i just set them up so its not like the oldest has deleted or anything but for some odd reason it just dosent want to pull the podcasts associated to the feeds. one of the feeds was a feed I had on here and when I installed say 10 more feeds it moved that one to the bottom of the list and it did have 8 podcasts associated with that feed and now it too says 0/0. It worked before but not sure why it is not working now.

The second (actually the first problem i had). I set up a feed before deleting it for the TWIT networks podcasts. it worked fine for a while then one day i accidently clicked download all 16 podcasts associatd with this feed in the feed window. Ever since i did that when i click on that to view the feed and not the podcast it no longer shows me the feed but another categories window that has all the feeds im subscribed to without their pictures, just looks like a bunch of folders. I love beyondpod but really would appreciate some help on these subjects.
BTW great program, keep up the good work and quick suggestion, maybe sometime soon you could make a windows version for my desktop so i can sync the podcasts back and forth?
Thanks again

Hi Rick,

If I understand correctly, your first problem is that for some of your feeds, BeyondPod fails to recognize that there are new podcasts and download them automatically. Is downloading not working for all feeds or only for some of them?

  • One way to diagnose the issue is to first make sure that BeyondPod recognizes that the feeds have podcasts. If you look at the feed content for those feeds, do you see the podcasts listed with the "Download" link under them. If the podcast does not exist - that means that for some reason BeyondPod fails to recognize that the feed has podcasts. In this case just try to update the feed again and if it still does not work, just post the URL of the feed and we will take a look why is it failing.
  • If there is a "Download" link, then make sure that "Download Podcasts" check box in the feed properties dialog is checked (Menu->Manage Feeds->Edit Feeds) and the number of podcasts to download is set correctly. If they are set correctly, try to update the feed (select the feed and then: Menu->Update And Download->Selected Feed). If the feeds don't download you can look at the Update Log (Menu->Update and Download->View Update Log), In the Processing section, it will show you what are the feed download settings and what new podcasts did BeyondPod find. It may give you some idea why is is failing.
  • If the "Download" link instead says "Download Again" that indicates that BeyondPod thinks that it has already downloaded the podcast and the podcast exist in its internal podcast download history. BeyondPod stores all download history in a file called BeyondPodHistory.bin. If you exit BeyondPod and rename that file, next time you start it BeyondPod should "forget" what was downloaded for all feeds and the podcasts should be available for automatic download again.

On your second problem, can you make sure that the feed has a valid URL in the "Feed URL" field in the feed properties. For each feed, BeyonhdPod stores 2 important pieces of data (both located in the feed properties dialog):
1. The URL of the RSS feed (Stored in the "Feed URL" field) and
2. The local folder where podcasts for this feed will be downloaded. This is specified in the "Podcast Download Folder" (this is the first field after you click on the "More Settings >> link)

Generally, you have to have one or the other. For feeds that don't have podcasts only Feed URL is needed. For feeds with podcasts, BeyondPod will automatically set the "Podcast Download Folder" based on your feeds root directory and the name of the feed the first time you try to download a podcast for this feed. One unique thing about BeyondPod, is that you can actually have a "Virtual" feed that does not have an URL but only has local content (like a folder with local music). In this case you leave the "Feed URL" empty and only set the "Podcast Download Folder" to whatever local folder you want to use. Those (virtual) feeds will show you the content of that folder and let you play the files and folders there using the BeyondPod player. I think in your case somehow the URL of that feed got deleted and the feed became a "virtual" feed showing you the local content.

I dont have any problems with some and others are the problems I have stated. If you want to test against one that i have that is working 100% for me you could use leoville.tv/podcasts/dgw.xml

Thanks Rick, pictures helped quite a bit. After looking at them, my current theory is that for some reason BeyondPod has trouble reading some of the Podcasts files from your storage card (assuming this is where you store them).
Here is what I suggest. Can you please check what are the Podcast download folders for the feeds you have trouble with, and especially the TWIT feed. You can find that on the feed properties screen (snap-4) if you scroll a bit down, and click on "More Settings >>" link. If you check the the download folder for a feed that works correctly (for example "Security Now") , you should see that that the path there points to an existing folder on your device. If you go to that folder using File Explorer, you should see all downloaded podcasts for that feed in this folder. What is interesting is what download folders are set for the feeds you have trouble: 1. Do their "Podcast Download Folder" point to a valid folder and 2. What is in that folder. Based on your screen shots TWIT's "Podcast Download Folder" should point to a folder that has bunch of other folders such as "A+ Certification Guide", "Crnaky Geeks" etc as you see them listed in the shap-2. If we are lucky, you will find that for some reason the feeds you have trouble with have a podcast download folder that is incorrect and setting them to the correct folders will fix the issue. I tried the "The Laporte Report" on my device and it worked fine, so I don't think at this point that the problem is in the feed itself.
Also I have seen occasional cases where storage card's FAT file system gets confused and some directories report incorrect number of files. If you find that for all problematic feeds the Podcast Download Directories are set correctly, you may have a FAT corruption and in this case you can just copy all the files from your storage card somewhere format the card and copy them back.

Ok I have replicated the first problem while playing in the download folder setting, It seems the reason that twit is showing all the folders is because the folder that was set did not create a twit folder but instead navigated toprogramfiles/beyondpod/download whereas all the others for example security now have navigated to their own specific folder say programfiles/beyondpod/downloads/securitynow. I believe this has fixed the first problem. I dont know why the last 4 feeds were showing 0/0 but when the first problem with the twit was fixed the second problem has fixed itself. Thank you so much for all your help. I love the program and will support it any way i can. Also...any possibility for a desktop program soon for syncing?

Rick, I am glad it worked.
One thing you can help with is to get the latest development build from http://www.beyondpod.mobi/BETA and give it a try. I would appreciate any feedback.

As far as the sync, in its very first versions BeyondPod did not have an rss reader part, but was primary a podcast player, You would download podcasts to your PC using something like iTunes, Doppler or Juice, and then copy podcasts to folders on your device (one folder per feed). In BeyondPod you would create a "(virtual) feed" that would point to that directory and play them from there. Initially I released another open source desktop application called BeyondSync that was designed to help you sync (copy) a set of folders from the desktop to the device. Adding the ability to download podcasts directly to the device made BeyondSync obsolete, but you can still download it from http://www.codeplex.com/BeyondSync. Podcast only playing functionality is still available in the current version of BeyondPod. All you have to do is create a virtual feed in BeyondPod (this is a feed that has only a "Podcast download folder" specified and the Feed URL is empty) and point it to any folder on the device that has audio or video files in it. There is a bit more information about the virtual feeds on the Resources wiki page.

Ok sorry if I am a bother but I do have one more question/problem I would like to share. Currently as I have stated i use WM6 on a AT&T Tilt phone. I also am using a plantronics voyager 855 stereo bluetooth headset i believe. I listen to my music and podcasts through this ehadset. When I have Windows Media Player open and I am listening to music I have a pause/Play next track previous track etc. buttons on the headset that work with WMP It also stops the music when a call comes in and when the call is ended resumes where it left off. This is not necessarily the case when using Beyondpod. When a call comes in the podcasts do stop and I can take the call however I must manually by the phone resume my podcasts afterword. I also cannott use the pause button or the next/previous track button. I am curious because I believe I read somewhere that it is using my default player to play the podcasts, that does the default podcast player have all the features of WMP and if so why am I not able to pause resume or skip track? If there is an option I am missing please let me know. If this is not an option in Beyondpod the may I suggest it become p[art of a future release.
Thanks again and sorry for the bother,

Rick,

You are correct that the default BeyondPod player is Windows Media Player. Unfortunately, AVRC profile (this is the functionality that allows Bluetooth devices to control the playback) is supported only in the standalone version of Windows Media Player. For some reason Microsoft has decided not to include that plugin when Windows Media Player is embedded in other applications (like BeyondPod). At this point the only solution is to switch the default player to "External with ASX Playlist" then BeyondPod will start the standalone version of Media Player and this will let you to control it using your headset. (One disadvantage of this approach is that when you use an external player, BeyondPod can't track played time for each podcast).
